1.0 out of 5 stars It's not pyroceramic Corningware! If you want that, don't buy this stuff, August 7, 2009
This review is from: Corningware FW 2-1/2-Quart/2.35L Oval with GC Sleeve (Kitchen)
The original "French White" Corningware was made of their famous pyroceramic glass, which could be used on the gas stove, put directly in the freezer, put under the broiler right from the freezer, and oh yes, also used in a microwave. And it was very unlikely to shatter if dropped. If you pounded on it with a hammer and nail you might have gotten it to break.

When World Kitchens bought the license from Corning, they decided to halt production of a line of cookware that would take anything and last forever, and dupe customers, especially brides, into thinking the stoneware "French White" was the same thing as the wonderful French White pyroceramic cookware previously available.

Once upon a time CorningWare was a name you could trust. Their unique pyroceramic glass cookware was almost indestructible, being devised from materials used for the nose cones of ballistic missiles. It was true "Space Age Technology" that could go directly from the stovetop into the refrigerator with nary a crack. A single CorningWare dish was said to have a lifespan of 1,000 years.

This was seen as a problem when the CorningWare brand was bought by World Kitchens Incorporated in 2001. They didn't want to sell you a dish every 1,000 years, they wanted the dishes to break so you would have to buy new ones. And so the pyroceramic formula was discontinued, and regular white-glazed stoneware was sold under the CorningWare brand.

Which is what we have here. This "CorningWare 2.5-qt. Oval Casserole with Lid - French White" is a fine, serviceable casserole dish that will bake up some tasty things in your oven. It has a classic design, and does just what it is supposed... Read more
